Feature films and filmmakers from the Asian region demonstrating excellence in the arts and sciences of filmmaking are considered through an open and official submission process. A panel of official Submission Organizations comprising authoritative film organizations from different territories, together with a panel of professional jurors determine the nominees from the eligible films produced and released theatrically in the Asian region in that year.

Up to 5 nominees are selected in each of the 10 categories and 6 nominees are selected in each of the other 4 categories, with the nomination list for the 5th AFA released in January 2011. The winners of the 5th AFA will be announced during the AFA Presentation Ceremony on March 21, 2011 at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre.
